Presenter's Notes

Janice Holter Kittok is known for engaging, unique, insightful and fun seminars. Janice presents at state, regional and national conferences, in districts across the country and abroad. She has 30 years of language classroom and educational leadership experience. Colleagues have honored her with the Central States Founders Award, the Minnesota Emma Birkmaier Award and the MN-AATSP Ricardo Narváez Award. Her presentations have been named Best of Minnesota and Best of Central States.

You’ve heard it: stay 90% in the target language, engage all learners, embed lessons with meaningful cultural content, get your students speaking and writing accurately but let go of the way you were taught grammar. Whew! Today's professional standards set a high bar for world language teachers. This workshop will go beyond talking about these topics to showing you HOW. A master teacher models mini lessons in Swedish that engage the participants through experiential learning as novice language learners. Every strategy is followed by research-based insights and step-by-step explanations so teachers can immediately adapt ideas to their own classroom – any age group, any language or any language level.

What is CI?

Comprehensible Input (CI) is understanding what you hear and read, the key to language acquisition.

What is Content-Based Storytelling?

Content-Based Storytelling (CBS), created by the workshop presenter, is a combination of strategies to teach cultural knowledge while staying in the target language (geography, history, biography, current events, legends, literature…).  CBS combines strategies from CI, Content-Based Instruction, Sheltered Content Instruction, Immersion, TPR, Natural Approach and TPRS. Teachers of any grade, level or language can use these strategies immediately.

Authentic Resources: Using technology to design and implement assessment

Kathy Varda, Spanish Teacher, Beloit Turner High School; Erin Nienas, Spanish Teacher, Neenah Joint School District.  Named BEST OF WISCONSIN at the Fall 2017 WAFLT Conference.

How can you maximize student engagement and learning through thematic units and authentic resources? Participants will learn about thematic units and how to spiral AP themes throughout all levels of curriculum, for any language. Discover the importance of using authentic resources formatively and summatively in your classroom.  Explore ways to find new resources using technology and how to develop assessments for each mode of communication. There will be time throughout the session to work with other teachers of your language to collaboratively design and share resources based on classroom needs.

Anita Alkhas, French Professor, UW Milwaukee and Bret Lipshutz, French Teacher, University School of Milwaukee will model how instructors can weave into their personal and professional lives efficient, engaging, and inexpensive practices that will help them steadily improve their linguistic and cultural proficiency. In an interactive format, the presenters will share a wide variety of creative yet practical high and low tech strategies and resources, all geared toward helping instructors to rekindle their love of language learning, to increase their linguistic confidence, and to strengthen their knowledge of the language and cultures they teach. Additional benefits include infusing new content into the curriculum as well as being able to serve as stronger role models to their students, thereby increasing motivation.
